Route 1 : History & Nature

geopark
The first route extends along, and sometimes exceeds, the boundaries of the universal Geopark of UNESCO Vikos-Aoos, covering an area of 1,200 square km, which includes in its geographical boundaries the Municipalities of Zagori and Konitsa and more specifically 62 villages. Representative formations of the events of the geological history of the area are the 51 Geolocations of the Geopark, which are divided into seven categories {springs, tectonic structures (cracks – folds), river terraces, rock coverings, panoramic views, karstic and glacial forms} and present a particular geological interest, rarity and beauty. The area is dominated by the gorges of Vikos and Aoos, the high mountains of the North Pindos: Tymfi, Smolikas, Trapezitsa, Nemertsiκa and the southern ends of Grammos, as well as the Aoos, Voidomatis and Sarantaporos rivers.
